Ask These 4 Questions to Clarify Your Purpose in the World

Ask These 4 Questions to Clarify Your Purpose in the World Ask These 4 Questions to Clarify Your Purpose in the World Article by Barry StilesBy the time I welches diagnosed with stage 4 neck and throat krebs, I had thought I was done with life-changing experiences for a while. In fact, I had been running the company that my previous life-changing experience inspired me to found for only six months when I got the call. What happened was this Five years before my own diagnosis, my then 4-year-old son was battling a rare form of lymphoma. I was witness to our beautiful boys extraordinary bravery as he endured spinal taps and an extremely aggressive chemo treatment.During this time, I occasionally escaped for a short run around Rice University to clear my head. During one run around the decomposed granite track that circles the campus, as I was looking for answers to questions that had none, I realized how I could combine my skills and passions to make a tangible difference in the world .I saw clearly that I could meld my skill set as an engineer and entrepreneur with my passion for family to help create a cleaner, less toxic environment for our kids. I envisioned a company that would keep plastic out of the oceans and landfills by using 100 percent post-consumer plastic, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by offering an eco-friendly alternative to concrete and asphalt, and cleanse toxic automobile pollutants through natural filtration of storm water. I wanted to make a real contribution toward a safer environment, and my sons bravery was the deep well from which I could draw inspiration.Years later, my own cancer treatment and recovery, coupled with the unending support of my team and our clients, sharpened the clarity of purpose I had found. No one person and no one company can eradicate cancer, but making strides in that direction has imbued our companys mission - to improve our environment and communities by eliminating toxins and carcinogens that are present in our everyday lives - with urgency and intention.I encourage you - entrepreneurs, business owners, and dreamers - to find fuel in your life challenges. The most trying times can clarify what motivates, inspires, and challenges you. When you see what lights your fire, go for it.You dont need a traumatic experience to take steps to clarify your purpose.Successful entrepreneurs rise, grind, stretch, and strive every day. They listen to clients, customers, and the marketplace - and to their guts. They ignore the voices that tell them business is just business, that its elend personal. Successful entrepreneurs know that if you make your business personal in a positive way, you can be a powerful agent for change. To clarify your purpose in the world, start by asking yourself these four questions1. Am I Happy? Are you passionate about what youre doing? Does it fulfill you? If you answered no, take some timetoconsider what you really love to do. What excites you so much that you lose track of time while doing it? What do you find yourself reading about or doing when youre off the clock? When I reflected on this question, my passion was easy to name my kids. When you figure out whatyour passion is, ask yourself Is this a hobby or a business? If its something just for you, it may be a hobby. If it solves a problem, makes something easier for other people, or improves a product or a service, then it may just be a business you can commit to in the long term. Equally important, make sure there is a market or an audience who will find value in your offering. If it fits these criteria and makes the world a better place, youll have a clear purpose going forward.2. What Do I Want? What do you want to achieve so much that you will be motivated to learn, work, and sacrifice more than anyone to reach that goal? Overnight successes are illusory. What the world sees as sudden is in fact backed by years of work and dedication. Ask yourself whether your passion is strong enough and your goal is clear enough. One way to figure out whether this passion will stay with you for any length of time is to write it down, put it aside, and come back to it in a month. For me, the drive to work toward a safer, cleaner, less toxic environment for my own kids - and children everywhere - was persistent and unflagging.3. What Do I Know?Once youve defined what you want to do, take inventory. Do you have the necessary skills? The appropriate education? The funds to get started? If not, map out a path to attaining what you need.As you make a plan, incorporate the ways your existing skill set will help you achieve your larger goal. The business I developedbrought together my skills - product design, invention, engineering - and my passions for manufacturing in the US and cleaning the environment. My primary taskat the start wasto shore up the capital and the material resources to begin my journey.4. Can I Solve a Problem? What is the gemeinsame agrarpolitik between what exists and what is needed? Is your solution new or different? Search the internet and scour retail to find out. Do a patent search, either on your own or with a patent attorney. Talk (and listen) to your potential customers.Having done this research, build a prototype of your product or write a detailed plan for your service. Assess the market potential for what you offer and once again consider whether you have something that solves a problem, improves someones health, or makes a process easier or better. This due diligence will help you determine just how the purpose you have found contributes to the greater social good. It will also show you whether you can be the best at doing it and find a place for yourself in the market. Finally, ask yourself Will it be fun to do this work? My research showed me that the solutions I proposed werent already in the marketplace. This freed me to anticipate how much fun I would have making permeable paving surfaces that snap together, like playing with Legos in the real world.Having a child with cancer was a bracing wake-up call for me about what really matters in this life. The surreality of the whole experience forced me to stop and listen, pause my entrepreneurial ambitions, and find a deeper purpose. Because I did, I was given the giftstoff of making a difference.Yes, there are many inspirational stories of people who find clarity because of traumas that wipe away the fog of the busyness of life, but its not necessary to experience trauma to find clarity for yourself. Just slow down, listen to your inner voice, and commit to change. When you clarify your purpose, it will be fun to go to work - and your business will benefit exponentially.A version of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.Barry Stiles is the founder and CEO of TRUEGRID Pavers, the 100 percent permeable paving alternative to concrete and asphalt that instantly absorbs stormwater and detains water below the surface. How to Network Using Your Personality

How to Network Using Your PersonalityHow to Network Using Your Personality4Does the thought of stereotypical networking- mingling with large groups of people for cocktails and casual chitchat- make you cringe? If so, you have plenty of company. Some people who consider themselves introverts may avoid small talk because they feel drained by it rather than energized. Others may simply prefer networking in smaller groups, or getting to know people in mora creative ways than at the average conference schmooze-fest. Knowing how to network for your personality is key to being successful.Your personality can hold the keys to the fruchtwein effective- and enjoyable- ways for you to network. Theres no need to be pigeonholed into traditional networking forums when different tactics might work better for you. Here are some innovative strategies to explore how to network based on your personality1. Try a professional networking dinner. If eating rubber chicken at a conference while attempting to h obnob with your neighbors leaves you cold, why not give a professional networking dinner a try? Many industries and organizations host dinners designed to make meeting and greeting a little more enjoyable. These gatherings are a little more intimate than networking in a giant conference hall, and may give you a chance to talk more in depth with one or two people while enjoying a delicious meal.2. Join a focus group.Attending large events doesnt appeal to everyone, partly because the venue may not lend itself to meeting people very easily. If you find you must attend one but feel uncomfortable starting conversations with strangers, then its smart to join a focus group or event in a smaller meeting room that is designed with networking in mind. For example, if you have the choice between sitting in a dark room watching a speaker review PowerPoint slides or participating in an interactive group discussion where a facilitator ensures that people talk to each other, choose the latter.3. Wo rk social media. For all the nuisances of social media, having the ability to easily connect with others online is a true gift to personalities who prefer to remain behind the scenes but dont want to be isolated. Through sites like LinkedIn and Twitter, you can identify people whose professional and personal interests match yours, greasing the wheels for conversation either virtually or in person.Make the most of this resource by joining professional groups on LinkedIn and participating in them regularly.4. Seek pure networks. For those who value genuine connections, the goal of simply connecting to random contacts on social media may seem vacuous. In this case, try this strategy of pure networking advocated by Joseph Terach, cofounder and senior writer at Resume Deli. Terach joined LinkedIn back in 2004 and only this year reached 500 contacts. As a career management professional, he had ample opportunity to build his network faster. Yet Terach intentionally took his time about it, vet ting each connection request he received before accepting it. His goal was to ensure that he either knew the requestor, or that the person could provide a convincing reason why they wanted to connect. If the prospective contact didnt pass Terachs screen, he didnt accept the connection. While it took over a decade to build up to his current contact list, he now has what he considers to be a pure 500 contacts.I feel comfortable to connect any of them, to ask for their help, or to offer mine, explains Terach. Its a powerful 500 that is a reliable resource to me in my career development- and equally reliable to anyone who wants to plug into my LinkedIn network. Is it time to explore some fresh ways of connecting with others whoplay better to your strengths? When you network in ways that match your personality, youll have a better time getting connected- and youll be more effective too.Readers, how do you networking using your personality? Can College Prepare Students for the Uncertainties of the 21st Century Economy

Can College Prepare Students for the Uncertainties of the 21st Century Economy Can College Prepare Students for the Uncertainties of the 21st Century Economy These people have been saying for years now that colleges especiallycertain (usually liberal arts) degree programs dont adequately prepare students for the working world. In Career Preparedness and Lifelong Learning,Instructure seems to support that argument. According to the study, which surveyed roughly 8,000 current students and college graduate from around the world, only 1 in 12 students feels that college has fully prepared them for their careers.Victory for the naysayers? Not so fast, says Jared Stein, Instructures vice president of research and education.Only 1 in 12 say they were fully prepared, but there was generally more satisfaction than dissatisfaction, Stein explains.Overall, students felt 67.7 percent prepared for their careers by their college experiences. So, its not complete satisfaction, but its hardly a sign that college is worthless. Id rather be two-third prepared than not prepared at all.But thats not to say that everything is prefect in college world. No, theres definitely some room for improvement, Stein says.I think this study reveals that college is not doing a bad job, but its not perfect, either, he explains. Many students especially in the U.S. attend college with the specific aim of preparing themselves for certain career paths, and many colleges invest extensively in such career preparedness programs. But investing more resources in career preparedness isnt exactly the best way for colleges to better serve students, according to Stein. Rather, he thinks colleges should be doing more to prepare students for the uncertainty theyll face once they enter the workforce. The Job-for-Life Is DeadOur own Kazim Ladimeji has written extensivelyabout the fact that, in todays economy, very few if any of us can expect to stay with one company for our entire lives. Furthermore, hes g one on to explore why few of us can even expect to stay with onecareeruntil we hit retirement. For workers today, the reality is that job- and career-hopping are the new normal, which may partially explain why 29.8 percent of graduates of four-year degree programs dont end up working in their chosen fields of study. It doesnt make a ton of sense, then, for colleges to focus on preparing students for one specific career path. This kind of education can be useful, sure, but it wont be terribly helpful when a former engineer decides, for whatever reason, that its time to become a middle school teacher instead. The rapidly advancing pace of technology plays a role in all of this, too. Every few years, it seems, some piece of technology comes along that either totally redefines an existing career or opens up doorsinto brand new career paths. How can colleges help students navigate unterstellung dramatic shifts when its impossible to predict what these shifts will actually look like when the y arrive?Even if career preparedness is what students go to college for, the uncertainty of todays economy is kind of a bigger factor, Stein says. What were suggesting is that colleges need to look beyond career preparedness and think more about the skills students will need to adapt, whether thats to the changes they will encounter within their careers or as they have to shift their expectations to a different career focus.Teaching Students to Prepare for Unpredictable Futures Through Lifelong LearningOn the surface, lifelong learning may sound like a vague, squishy kind of idea, but Stein and Instructure concretely define the concept for the purpose of the study as any kind of learning that happens throughout your lifetime that supports your personal goals.Lifelonglearning can happen in formal classrooms, or it can happen informally, during ones day-to-day life. It can even happen non-formally (that is, through organized or semi-organized learning outside of a formal program).Rega rdless of how or whereit occurs, Stein says, lifelong learning is about having the skills so that you can go and accomplish your goals by learning on your own and finding the experiences and resources that you need to get there.By teaching students how to become lifelong learners how to seek out the experiences and resources they need to accomplish their goals colleges can go a long way toward preparing students to cope successfully with the volatile economy theyre destined (doomed?) to enter.Stein says that Instructure isnt quite ready to present a broad vision to guide higher education toward betterequipping students for uncertainty, but he does have two common sense, straightforward recommendations he can make right now.First, colleges can start by ensuring that students have the proper expectations for what life after college will be like.My college experience didnt ask me to consider the strategies Id need to make career shifts throughout my life, Stein says. Those shifts are part of the 21st century, and I think thats where colleges and universities can start to help students be more prepared.Second, colleges can focus on teaching students the skills necessary for self-directed learning. That way, every student who leaves college not only has the knowledge and skills that will be helpful in their chosen career fields, but also, the skills they need to keep learning effectively on their own in any career, even if they have to shift from one to another, Stein says. So, no, it doesnt seem that colleges are tremendous wastes of time. (Nor, would I wager, are liberal arts degrees but thats a fight Ill have to have another time with anyone who wants to pick it.) They do a pretty decent job of preparing students for their careers. What higher educationreallyneeds to work on is preparing students for what happens when they dont (or cant) get the career they wanted.

How to make your kids smarter in 10 scientific steps

How to make your kids smarter in 10 scientific stepsHow to make your kids smarter in 10 scientific stepsIve explored the science behindwhat makes kids happier, whattype of parenting works bestand what makes forjoyful families.Butwhat makes children - from babies up through the teen years - smarter? Here are 10 things science says can help1) Music lessonsPlain and simpleresearch show music lessonsmake kids smarterCompared with children in the control groups, children in the music groups exhibited greater increases in full-scale IQ. The effect welches relatively small, but it generalized across IQ subtests, index scores, and a standardized measure of academic achievement. In fact musical training helpseveryone, young and oldA growing body of research finds musical training gives students learning advantages in the classroom. Now a Northwestern University study finds musical training can benefit Grandma, too, by offsetting some of the deleterious effects of aging.(More on what the music y ou love says about youhere.)2) The dumb jock is a mythDumb jocks are dumb because they spend mora time on the field than in the library. But what if you make sure your child devotes time to both?Being in good shapeincreases your ability to learn. After exercise people pick up new vocabulary words 20% faster.ViaSpark The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the BrainIndeed, in a 2007 study of humans, German researchers found that people learn vocabulary words 20 percent faster following exercise than they did before exercise, and that the rate of learning correlated directly with levels of BDNF.A 3 month exercise regimen increased bloodflow to thepart of the brain focused on memory and learning by 30%.ViaSpark The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the BrainIn his study, Small put a group of volunteers on a three-month exercise regimen and then took pictures of their brains What he saw was that the capillary volume in the memory area of the hippocampus increased by 30 per cent, a truly remarkable change.(More on how exercise can make you and your kids smarter and happierhere.)3) Dont read to your kids, read with themGot a little one who is learning to read?Dont let them just stare at the pictures in a book while you do all the reading.Call attention to the words. Read with them, not to them.Research showsit helps build their reading skillswhen shared book reading is enriched with explicit attention to the development of childrens reading skills and strategies, then shared book reading is an effective vehicle for promoting the early literacy ability even of disadvantaged children.(More on things most parents do wronghere.)4) Sleep deprivation makes kids stupidMissing an hour of sleep turns a sixth graders brain into that of a fourth grader.ViaNurtureShockA loss of one hour of sleep is equivalent to the loss of two years of cognitive maturation and development,Sadeh explained. There is a correlation between grades and average amount of sleep.ViaNurtureS hockTeens who received As averaged about fifteen mora minutes sleep than the B students, who in turn averaged fifteen more minutes than the Cs, and so on.Wahlstroms data was an almost perfect replication of results from an earlier study of over 3,000 Rhode Island high schoolers by Browns Carskadon. Certainly, unterstellung are averages, but the consistency of the two studies stands out. Every fifteen minutes counts.(More on how to sleep betterhere.)5) IQ isnt worth much without self-disciplineSelf-discipline beats IQat predicting who will be successful in life. From Charles Duhiggs excellent bookThe Power of Habit Why We Do What We Do in Life and BusinessDozens of studies show that willpower is the single most important keystone habit for individual successStudents who exerted high levels of willpower were more likely to earn higher grades in their classes and gain admission into more selective schools. They had fewer absences and spent less time watching television and more hours on homework. Highly self-disciplined adolescents outperformed their more impulsive peers on every academic-performance variable, the researchers wrote. Self-discipline predicted academic performance more robustly than did IQ. Self-discipline also predicted which students would improve their grades over the course of the school year, whereas IQ did not. Self-discipline has a bigger effect on academic performance than does intellectual talent.Grades have more to do withconscientiousnessthan raw smarts.ViaHow Children Succeed Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Characterconscientiousness was the trait that best predicted workplace success. What intrigues Roberts about conscientiousness is that it predicts so many outcomes that go far beyond the workplace. People high in conscientiousness get better grades in school and college they commit fewer crimes and they stay married longer. They live longer and not just because they smoke and drink less. They have fewer strokes, lower blood pressure, and a lower incidence of Alzheimers disease.Who does best in life? Kids withgrit.ViaDrive The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us.The best predictor of success, the researchers found, was the prospective cadets ratings on a noncognitive, nonphysical trait known asgrit- defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals.(More on how to improve self-disciplinehere.)6) Learning is an active processBaby Einstein and braintraining gamesdont work.In fact, theres reason to believe they make kidsdumber.ViaBrain Rules for Baby How to Raise a Smart and Happy Child from Zero to FiveThe products didnt work at all. They had no positive effect on the vocabularies of the target audience, infants 17-24 months. Some did actual harm. For every hour per day the children spent watching certain baby DVDs and videos, the infants understood an average of six to eight fewer words than infants who did not watch them.Real learning isnt passive, its active. What doesDan Coyle, author ofThe T alent Coderecommend?Stop merely reading and test yourselfOur brains evolved to learn by doing things, not by hearing about them. This is one of the reasons that, for a lot of skills, its much better to spend about two thirds of your time testing yourself on it rather than absorbing it. Theres a rule of two thirds. If you want to, say, memorize a passage, its better to spend 30 percent of your time reading it, and the other 70 percent of your time testing yourself on that knowledge.(More on how to teach your child to be a hard worker in schoolhere.)7) Treats can be a good thing - at the right timeOverall, it would be better if kids ate healthy all the time.Research shows eating makes a difference inchildrens gradesEverybody knows you should eat breakfast the day of a big test. High-carb, high-fiber, slow-digesting foods like oatmeal are best, research shows. But what you eat a week in advance matters, too. When 16 college students were tested on attention and thinking speed, then fe d a five-day high-fat, low-carb diet heavy on meat, eggs, cheese and cream and tested again, their performance declined. There are always exceptions. No kid eats healthy all the time. But the irony is thatkids often get bad foods at the wrong time.Researchshows caffeine and sugar can be brain boostersCaffeine and glucose can have beneficial effects on cognitive performance Since these areas have been related to the sustained attention and working memory processes, results would suggest that combined caffeine and glucose could increase the efficiency of the attentional system.Theyre also potent rewards kids love.So if kids are going to occasionally eat candy and sodamaybe its better to give it to them while they study then when theyre relaxing.(More on the best way for kids to studyhere.)8) Happy kids = successful kidsHappier kids are more likely to turn into successful, accomplished adults.ViaRaising Happiness 10 Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids and Happier Parentshappiness is a trem endous advantage in a world that emphasizes performance. On average, happy people are more successful than unhappy people at both work and love. They get better performance reviews, have more prestigious jobs, and earn higher salaries. They are more likely to get married, and once married, they are more satisfied with their marriage. And whats the first step in creating happier kids? Being ahappy parent.(More on how to raise happy kidshere.)9) Peer group mattersYour genetics and the genetics of your partner have a huge effect on your kids. But the way you raise your kids? Not nearly as much.Via Malcolm GladwellsThe Tipping Point How Little Things Can Make a Big DifferenceOn things like measures of intellectual ability and certain aspects of personality, the biological children are fairly similar to their parents. For the adopted kids, however, the results are downright strange.Their scores have nothing whatsoever in common with their adoptive parents these children are no more similar in their personality or intellectual skills to the people who raised them, fed them, clothed them, read to them, taught them, and loved them for sixteen years than they are to any two adults taken at random off the street. So what does have an enormous affect on your childrens behavior? Theirpeer group. We usually only talk aboutpeer pressurewhen its a negative but more often than not, its apositive.Living in a nice neighborhood, going to solid schools and making sure your children hang out with good kids can make a huge difference.Whats the easiest way for a college student to improve their GPA?Pick a smart roommate.ViaThe Happiness Advantage The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at WorkOne study of Dartmouth College students by economist Bruce Sacerdote illustrates how powerful this influence is.He found that when students with low grade-point averages simply began rooming with higher-scoring students, their grade-point averages increased. The se students, according to the researchers, appeared to infect each other with good and bad study habits- such that a roommate with a high grade-point average would drag upward the G.P.A. of his lower-scoring roommate.(More on the how others affect your behavior without you realizing ithere.)10) Believe in themBelieving your kid is smarter than average makes a difference. When teachers were told certain kids were sharper, those kids did better - even though the kids were selected at random.ViaThe Heart of Social Psychology A Backstage View of a Passionate ScienceRosenthal and Lenore Jacobson (1968) did the saatkorn study in a classroom, telling elementary school teachers that they had certain students in their class who were academic spurters. In fact, these students were selected at random. Absolutely nothing else was done by the researchers to single out these children. Its All in the Bag!

Its All in the BagIts All in the BagIt goes without saying that preparation is key when youre interviewing for a job Youve done your research, youve laid out your dress to impress outfit, and youve planned your route down to the last millisecond but have you thought about packing your bag?First of all, whether your male or female, you should carry a bag or briefcase. It should look professional and preferably have enough room for an envelope with copies of your resume. The bag should be large enough to fit your belongings without them sticking out of the top of overflowing. A basic, clean purse and/or briefcase or beige/brown colored satchel are always good choices. Now, what do you put in your bag? Here are six essentials you must bring with you to any job interviewResume and Copies of Essential DocumentsWe have become so reliant on the internet and our phones for almost everything but it is always advantageous to include a paper copy of driving directions or any instructions about what to do and where to go once you arrive at your interview. If your GPS fails, or you cant access key information on your phone about the interview, what happens then? Never trust that you will have access to WiFi so save yourself a lot of agony by preparing a backup paper copy. Make sure to include any notes or practice interview questions you jotted down for the meeting.OuterwearChilly weather can catch you off guard, so you might consider bringing or wearing a jacket that can fit in your bag during the interview. The last thing you need is appearing disheveled by carrying a big bulky coat. Just make sure it can fit in your bag.Makeup For all our female readers, consider which lipstick or gloss that will best showcase that beautiful, friendly smile Fire engine red isnt always a good choice. Toss your makeup bag inside your purse or briefcase and do a little touchup before your interview.MintsIf you had a garlic bagel on your way to the interview, you might want to include a tin of mints in your bag for a fresh minty breath. No gum You might forget to toss it on your way in and its never a good idea to chew gum during a job interview.SnackA hangry interviewee is never a good version to present to a potential employer so if you skip breakfast, bring along an easy, edible snack (no Funyuns or juicy fruit) so you can dedicate 100 percent of your brainpower to the interview.PenWhat if the hiring manager gives you a quick written assessment or asks you to do a calculation and puts you in a conference room without anything to write with? Pinocchio and the Pencil Pushers

Pinocchio and the Pencil Pushers Integrity is a quality managers and corporate leaders need to have. But in reality, 35.4 percent ofcompany leadership tells at least one white lieper day. PER DAYSurprisingly enough, managers arent lying to their employees, but to their supervisors. Which means, if you manage a team, you might be on the receiving end of these lies. Its even more disappointing that employees often see their managers as having poor moral ethicsan astonishing 80.1 percent. This is not the kind of leadership we want to have. Even when it is a small, seemingly insignificant lie, lying is toxic in the workplace. But how to prevent it, or perhaps just offset the damage? Here are four quick ideas to help you keep an office worthy of Honest AbeDont leave room for liesInstead of telling an employee how great they are and how valued their work is with superfluous words, use metrics.Set measur able objectives to show employees what their work is truly worth. This saves managers from the temptation of using phrases that dont always match the employee. Most employees dont fit the youre one of our best employees, good job, or heres your raise category. Keep in mind that employees want to help achieve company objectives, but many dont know what those are. Be as transparent as possible and close every feedback loop.Recognize that omission is part of the aufgabeDeception in the office goes beyond blatant lies. Say Joe processed an insurance claim. He accidentally mixed up some numbers, was aware of the mistake, but didnt say anything. If he doesnt get caught, what does it matter?Lying by omissionperpetuates the habit. It doesnt seem like a true lie, however. Allowing another person to come to the wrong conclusion without correction is just as big of a problem as blatantly lying. Again, transparency in reporting can solve this issue, at least in part. Look to 360 reviews and don t forget to positively motivate those who arent hiding part of the story.Pick your battlesWhile roughly 1 out of 3 of allemployees tell one white lie at least once per day, that doesnt make the habit any less of a problem. However, management should learn that a one-size-fits-all strategy may simply alienate workers. Instead, focus on lies that directly affect performance or other members of the team. Even when confrontation is difficult, it is important to point out unacceptable behavior, as allowing one person to lie continuously can propagate the behavior. Implementing an intranet with few closed groups can help this behavior. Another idea? Make team goals (and fulfillment) available across the enterprise to avoid confusion.Build in AccountabilityIt is easy to lie about a project or a deadline when no one is accountable. If no one is responsible for it, who will speak up for it? Setting a good accountability policy will place a standard on management and employees alike. It will ensure everyone holds to the same policies. It is a team effort to hold each other accountable for corporate actions. Encourage your employees to keep accountablefor their own work bynotlage covering up mistakes Own up to mistakes. If mistakes happened, they will not stay hidden in the long run. Encourage this by not overreacting when someone makes an honest mistake. Instead, use it as a teachable moment. Not blaming others Again, own up to mistakes.Dont put them on someone else. This not only creates for a hostile work environment, it makes others distrustful. Leaders can ensure this doesnt happen by asking employees to show their work, this generally reveals the guilty party.Do more than the minimum Some employees barely meet requirements. Get all team members on board with consistent process improvement. Some will scoff, others will rise to the challenge, more will want to at least keep up with the higher bar set.Meet expectations Its an adult environment. The workplace is no l onger about good try, or youll get em next time comments. Employees either meet expectations or they dont. While its important to praise employees for a job well done (gratitude is especially effective) an effective leader will not sugarcoat a poorly executed plan.Pinpointing PinocchioWhat needs to happen when someone deliberately lies in the workplace? If it is a habitual tendency, management needs to address the issue. Lying in the workplace can greatly depreciate the environment for employees and the quality of work. The bigger the lie, the bigger the problem they all need attention. There arethree options in dealing with a liar. An employee can confront the liar, report them, or ignore the lies. The latter option is toxic for the workplace.

Fact You need a personal business card (+ heres what it should have on it)

Fact You need a personal geschftlicher umgang card (+ heres what it should have on it)Fact You need a personal geschftliches miteinander card (+ heres what it should have on it)Youve probably had a company business card at one job or aelendher, but do you carry a personal one?Because the thing is, if youre currently job searching, hoping to start a side hustle or land some freelance, or youd just like to keep your options open, your regular company card isnt going to cut it. That tiny, unassuming personal business card just might be what stands between you and your next big career opportunity.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWhy you need a personal business cardSmart women make their own luck (and business cards). When I decided I wanted to leave my bebrdeung job, I knewit was time to start putting myself out there (and networking any chance I got). I had business cards through my company. They were like most company cards white, square, and bland. I didnt want to be seen with them. One night, after a motivating happy hour dialogue, I came home feeling like I needed to do something. I wanted proof that I was ready to start a new chapter. A requisite Google search for personal business card entwurf led me toMOO, an online service that letsyoucreate and print cards online (courtesy of plenty of well-designed templates). Im sure there are other companies out there that will do the same, but so farMOO is the best one Ive found.I spent the nexthour designing my ideal layout. It was a card on my own terms, according to my own rules based onmy career transition goals. A week later, the package arrived, andmy career hasnt looked the same since. Heres how a personal business card changes the game1. It helps you control your own storyIn a few simple words, I summarized who I wasprofessionally, but alsowho I wanted tobecome. Each cardgave all the information people neede d to find meonline, including a link to myportfolio but also my Instagram, which I knew demonstrated my aesthetic and voice.2. It makes it easy for people to remember- and hire- youIn simple terms, those cards made it easier for people to hire me. They didnt have to just remember my last name the next day or go digging through search results to find my portfolio. And so they did hire me. Just like that, I hit a new level of legitimacy- and I started getting calls.3. It gives you confidence (seriously)Personal business cards serve a specific need they help yousummarize who you are to a potential contact. But they also make your professional lifefeelreal, even ifyoure currently faking it untilyou make it. And thats the heart of it even though I felt like my career had hit a dead end, ordering those cards made me feel like Id done something about it, and thatI was gonna be OK.What to include on a personal business card1. Your name- The one you want them to GoogleYour full name or, more specifically, the one you use professionally. Kit isnt my given name (Ill leave you the fun of guessing what it is), but itisthe name Ive published writing under since I was 15. And its the name I want people to search for on Google when theyre looking into my experience because thats where all the good stuff is.2. What you do or want to doMaybe youre slaving away as an administrative assistant but your ultimate goal is to become a graphic designer. Your personal business card shouldnot read administrative assistant. That isnt who you are Thats just what youre doingright now. Think about what youd like to call yourself. Designer? UX Design + Web Design? If youre not sure, look up people you admire on LinkedIn and do some research on the ways they describe their work and themselves.3. Your personal portfolio siteIf you dont have one and youre trying to make a career transition or start freelancing, take a break from designing your card and do that now. We have an entire downloadable g uide dedicated tosetting up your personal websiteas well as various articles aboutwhy you need a personal siteandwhat to include in an online portfolio(even if youre not a creative).4. Phone number (preferably your cell phone) and/or personal emaille addressYou want people to be able to reach you quickly and easily, so a personal business card shouldinclude at least two options for contacting you. And make sure that whatever email address you include, youre checking it regularly and often. If yourethinking about freelancing, you need to get used to quick replies. I always answer within 24 hours. You can choose to skip the phone number, but honestly, whenever Ive seen people doing that, they wind up having to jot their phone numbers down inpen on the card anyway. My recommendation is to skip the hassle and include it.5. Social handles as applicableUnless your industry skews toward keeping these things private, youremay want to include your LinkedIn, Twitter, and/or Instagram dependin g on what youd like to show off. If youre a wordsmith, Twitter makes sense. If youre trying to show that you have a particular style and eye for design, you might include Instagram. It varies because personal business cards are just that- personal. Think about your end goal and decide what makes the most sense.6. (Optional) A personal logoIf your personal brand is on lock, you might have a logo on your personal website, that you can include on your business card as well. If so, great. A consistent brand is great. If not, dont sweat it. Simple is always best anyway. What not to include on a personal business cardJust a few pointers here because sometimes people overdo itToo much design- the goal is for them to focus on your information, not on the graphicsYour mailing address- danger zone. Do you really want that floating around in the world? It also takes up too much space so its a lose-lose.Typos- On multiple occasions, Ive encountered a personal business card that has a typo, even in the email address. Thats a big problem if you want people to contact you. So double- and triple-check before hitting PurchaseA QR code- No one uses these anymore, but somehow they still crop up. Just dont. People are savvy enough to type in your personal website URL on their own.The simplest personal business card templateIf youre not sure where to start, this layout is a no-fail option. Reasons to Call in Sick - Should You Stay Home From Work

Reasons to Call in Sick - Should You Stay Home From Work Reasons to Call in Sick - Should You Stay Home From Work When you wake up with an upset stomach or a stuffy nose, are you someone who thinks Oh no. I dont want to call in sick. Alternatively, maybe youre one of those people who feels that its okay to take a sick day even when you arent ill. If you are a member of the first camp, you may be underutilizing your sick days, but if you count yourself among the second, you may be misusing them. 5 Good Reasons to Call in Sick Your sick days are yours to use when you need them. Put your workaholic tendencies aside. Organizations rarely fall apart because of one employers absence. Calling out from work may even save everyone else from catching what you have. Going to work sick means spreading your germs around the office, which is sure to annoy your coworkers. Its also difficult to be productive at work when you arent feeling well. Here are some appropriate reasons to stay home: You Have an Illness That Might Be Contagious:  If you suspect your coworkers could catch your illness, stay home until you are better or know for sure that what you have isnt contagious. For example, if you are throwing up or have diarrhea, you could have a stomach virus. The sudden onset of symptoms like fever, chills, and body aches, could mean you have the flu. Both a stomach virus and the flu can spread through a workplace like a wildfire, taking down everything in its path. If your eyes are red, swollen, and crusty, you may have conjunctivitis- also known as pink eye- which is highly infectious. A severe sore throat with swollen glands is a symptom of strep throat and you can spread it to your coworkers. You Have a Fever:  You will get a fever when fighting an infection. Not only is it a symptom of a contagious illness, but it will make you tired and keep you from being able to work efficiently. Go to the doctor to find out if an antibiotic is necessary. Also, get plenty of rest. You Have a Rash: In addition to rashes making you extremely uncomfortable, some are also communicable. Until you know the cause, avoid contact with other people. If you find out it isnt contagious, go back to work, but dont be surprised if your coworkers keep their distance. While you dont have to go until detail, inform them they cant catch it. Dont forget to mind your manners and relieve any itchiness in private. You Are in Significant Pain:  Headaches, injuries, sprains, broken bones, and other problems can cause severe or significant pain. After you have taken the proper measures to make sure nothing that can endanger your overall health is causing it, you can go to work if you choose. Realize, however, that that you may not be able to operate at your peak performance and pain medication will compound that problem. Rest is beneficial. You Have a Common Cold: Whether or not to call in sick because you have a cold depends on its severity. A case of the sniffles isnt a good reason to take the day off, but if you are rapidly emptying boxes of tissues and have an uncontrollable cough, your cold is pretty bad. It can cause problems with concentration and can spread to others in your workplace. If you decide to go to work, wash your hands frequently and keep your phone and computer germ-free by wiping them down with alcohol wipes if others share them. If your coworkers keep their distance, dont be offended. It may not be the garlic dill you had with lunch, but instead their fear of catching what you have. The need for extended absence due to a more severe illness may qualify you for the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). It allows eligible workers to take up to 12 weeks off from work. According to the FMLA, your employer doesnt have to pay you for this time- a state law may require that it does- but the organization must allow you to return to your position or a similar one when your leave ends. 5 Bad Excuses for Taking a Sick Day Excessive use of sick days may catch your bosss attention. When you call in sick, it is usually on short notice and can leave your boss scrambling to cover your duties. ? Do not take advantage of sick days to tend to matters for which a personal or vacation day would be more suitable. Whenever you can notify your boss ahead of time that you need to take off- using a personal or vacation day- do so. Here are some examples: A Previous Engagement: If you know in advance about something you need to attend- for example, an event at your childs school or an appointment- use your personal or vacation time.A Beach Day:  When you wake up on a hot summer day, your thoughts may turn to sand and surf. Its unfair to leave your colleagues in the lurch to have a day basking in the sun. Plan your trip to the beach ahead of time and request a vacation or personal day.A Job Interview:  Congratulations! Interviews sometimes come up on short notice. Unless your boss knows about your job search, telling them you need to take off for an interview isnt an option. Instead, try to schedule it before or after work. You Are Tired:  Did you stay up too late? That isnt a good enough reason to take the day off. Suck it up and head to work. Take a quick nap during your lunch hour and plan to go to bed earlier that night.Religious Observance:  Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 requires employers with over 15 employees to allow their workers to take time off for religious observance unless it causes undue hardship to the organization. This absence should come out of your personal or vacation time.

When to Say No (or Yes) to Additional Responsibilities at Work

When to Say No (or Yes) to Additional Responsibilities at Work When to Say No (or Yes) to Additional Responsibilities at Work Think about your average work week: How many of your daily tasks fit into the original job description you were hired to do? Chances are that, over time, out of an eagerness to prove yourself, you’ve taken on a number of responsibilities that fall well outside the realm of your core role. But how much of this newfound accountability is contributing to your professional advancement- and how much of it is just running you ragged? Top performers can be a prime target for additional requests because they enjoy challenge and frequently seek out new ways to demonstrate their skills. But do you find yourself saying yes every time your boss asks you to take a stab at a project that’s in no way related to your core competencies simply because you want to look like a team player? If you do, you may find yourself on the brink of burnout, living at work, and unable to find time for yourself or friends. And what’s worse, you may be moving through every day with a cloud of dread hovering over your head, wondering, “How on earth will I ever get all this done?” Often, we say yes to additional projects because we think that it may pay off with a promotion, raise, or other reward. We adopt the mentality of “I just need to bust my butt for the next couple of months; then I can relax.” Too often, those couple of months come and go, but the promotion never comes. You grow increasingly frustrated, but don’t slow down because maybe, just maybe, this month your boss will recognize all the hard work you’re putting in and it’ll pay off. It can turn into a never-ending cycle. While there’s nothing wrong with taking on additional responsibilities, if you’re not careful to draw the line somewhere, it can become a problem. When you have too much on your plate, not only can the quality of your work start to suffer, but your relationships and commitments outside of work may take a blow as well. Does this mean you should stop saying yes to additional responsibilities altogether? Absolutely not! But it’s up to you to make sure you’re agreeing for the right reasons. If you’re someone who tends to agree to every additional request that comes your way, here’s how to gauge when it’s appropriate to push back. When Your Primary Job Responsibilities Will Suffer It can be dangerous to agree to more if it impacts your ability to satisfy the job requirements that you were hired to do. For example, say you work in HR, but you’ve been asked to attend some marketing-related conferences because that team is short-staffed. You may soon find yourself spending so much time away from your desk at events (which, truthfully, should be done by someone who has direct client contact and knows the ins and outs of marketing- not you!) that your primary job responsibilities, like training new employees and interviewing potential hires, starts to suffer. If it’s an assignment that will detract from your core responsibilities, overwhelm you, and compromise your ability to consistently deliver a high quality of work- all without any significant upside- it’s best to decline and focus on what’s already on your plate. When it’s Someone Else’s Work Is your boss asking you to do the job of an intern and change the printer ink, even though you’re a manager? No matter your role, it’s easy to get sucked into doing tasks that “aren’t your job”- like a sales rep who finds him- or herself constantly fielding customer service calls. And there’s something to be said for adopting an all-hands-on-deck working style, but if you let it go too far, your willingness to pitch in can be abused. How do you spot these time-sucking tasks? Ask yourself: Is this contributing to my professional development in a strategic way? If the assignment doesn’t link back to your career growth somehow, don’t be afraid to say no and shift the responsibility off your plate. (But it’s still a good idea to offer a proactive solution, like coaching another team member to do the task.) When There’s No Exit Strategy Don’t take on additional responsibilities until you understand the full scope of what’s involved, how long it will take, who you’ll be working with, and how long the project will last. You want to avoid miscommunication down the road, and most importantly, you don’t want it to be an open-ended arrangement. You may be happy to be a team player, but at the end of the day you have core responsibilities- and those should be your top priorities. For example, if your boss delivers a fairly vague request, like asking you to oversee a new initiative and provide strategic guidance, get the specifics about what exactly that means. How long will you be needed on the project? Will you be expected to attend certain meetings or be on weekly calls? Make sure you have a crystal clear picture of what’s involved before saying yes in order to shield yourself from becoming embroiled in an open-ended, never-ending situation. When it Won’t Contribute to Your Skill Set, Growth, or Network Even an additional responsibility that doesn’t exactly fit your job description can be the opportunity to get in front of important people. For example, being asked to help create a sales deck for a company meeting is a great opportunity to get your work in front of senior management. On the other hand, a solo project like filing old reports for your manager offers zero chance to expand your network in a meaningful way. Since it has little relationship-building potential and is essentially busy work, it’s better to pass on it in favor of stretch assignments that will help you grow. If you do decide to decline a request, keep the conversation emotionally neutral. Focus on how it might affect the company’s goals, not your stress levels. And if you agree to take on new work, clearly outline what you expect the new responsibility will result in- e.g., better assignments in the future, a move toward a promotion, or a mention at the board meeting- so that you don’t end up in a dead-end situation. Learning to say yes to the right types of opportunities- and say no to others- is an exercise in setting healthy boundaries at work. Speaking up for yourself will not only save you from the anxiety of taking on more than you can handle, but it will display maturity, confidence, and strong self-management skills to your boss and others in the office. Remember, setting boundaries and sticking to them doesn’t show you lack drive or ambition- it shows that you’re an employee of high value who prioritizes doing the job at hand. Research to be done by the REMADE Institute will address issue... Research to be done by the REMADE Institute will address issue... Raising the Bar on Reuse, Recycling, Remanufacturing A 13th institute is the newest addition to the U.S. Department of Energys (DOE) five-year-old Manufacturing USA program whose goal is to improve U.S. manufacturing competitiveness by developing innovative advanced manufacturing technologies while also incorporating energy-reduction and sustainability principles. The newest institute, Reducing Embodied-Energy and Decreasing Emissions (REMADE for short), is focused on key industrial platform technologies that will dramatically reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with industrial-scale materials production. According to DOE, REMADE could reduce energy usage in the U.S. manufacturing sector by up to 6%, saving billions in energy costs. Led by the Rochester Institute of Technologys Golisano Institute for Sustainability, REMADE has approximately $140 million in funding over five years from the federal government and private commitments. Operating under DOEs Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energys Advanced Manufacturing Office, the consortium brings together more than 100 entities, including national labs, leading universities, companies, industry trade associations, and foundations as partners to bridge the gap between research and deployment. Overall, REMADE will aim to drive down the cost of technologies for reusing, recycling, and remanufacturing of materials such as metals, fibers, polymers, and electronic waste and aims to achieve a 50% improvement in overall energy efficiency by 2027. The consortium will do this in part by developing advanced manufacturing technologies for reducing embodied energy, the sum of all the energy required to produce any goods. Research to be done by the REMADE Institute will address issues such as material aging and wear. Image: RIT Michael G. Thurston, research faculty and technical director, RITs Sustainability Institute, said the technical role of his area in the project is primarily focused on the remanufacturing side, which involves product design, design for disassembly in particular, and design for the lifecycle. In recent years, there has been increased emphasis on having original equipment manufacturers design multiple lifecycles into their products so that products last longer, Thurston said. Although that requires remanufacturing some parts, it brings with it the benefit of taking advantage of the initial material and process investments. Generally, your margins are better in remanufacturing because there is less effort and less material costs than with manufacturing new, he said. The traditional linear production process is you manufacture, the customer gets the product, they use it through one lifecycle, then they throw it away. The platform for automotive or industrial equipment, such as mining equipment, may be designed to have anywhere from a 10- to 50-year lifecycle, but components within the platform may not last that long. Caterpillar probably does more remanufacturing of its equipment than any other company in the world, Thurston said. In a mining truck, the engines wont last as long as the rest of the platform so instead of building an entirely new truck, the company reconditions the engine when it no longer meets reliability and performance requirements, he said. That reduces lifecycle energy consumption considerably. For the automotive industry, some estimates are that the energy it takes to make a car is somewhere between one-quarter and one-third of all of the energy the car uses over its whole lifetime including the gasoline that is needed, said Eric Hittinger, an engineer and RIT professor specializing in public policy. To work on fuel efficiency is great. That works on the larger share of the cars energy use, but if youre ignoring the quarter or third of the energy required to make the car in the first place, then you are missing some potential energy savings, he said. In remanufacturing, one of the first decisions that should be made for each product is to determine strategy, according to Thurston. If you are optimizing a product for a single lifecycle, you may design in less robustness than if designing a product and component within a product for multiple lifecycles, he said. Factors that come into play include economics and market competitiveness. DOE has recognized that the cost of remanufacturing must be reduced to encourage the market to use less primary material and more secondary material. That means how can we restore products to like new condition more cost effectively than is done today, Thurston said, taking into consideration both design and the manufacturing process. If we design products that can be taken apart and reconditioned more cost effectively, that makes remanufacturing more competitive. On the process side, an example of a big challenge with automotive or any heavy duty component is cleaning because of the high cost, one of the higher within remanufacturing. After use, components are often rusty, oily, and very dirty so one of the first core processes in remanufacturing is cleaning all the contamination. By reducing that cost, we can improve the overall economics. So cleaning technology is one of the technologies that the institute plans to look at, Thurston said. The money will go a long way to help research progress faster than in the past and also encourage researchers to work together and build on each others advancements. Most of the participants in REMADE have been working in these technology areas for years, but there hasnt been much funding, particularly for remanufacturing. We believe the investment will accelerate technology development and technology adoption, Thurston said. It also provides a mechanism to bring everyone together, and with a combined capability you will get more than if everybody is working separately in their own little silo. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. For Further Discussion We believe the investment will accelerate technology development and technology adoption. Michael G. How to Change Careers Without Going Back to School

How to Change Careers Without Going Back to School How to Change Careers Without Going Back to School If you’re thinking about changing careers, but you don’t want to spend the time and money to get a new degree, here’s some good news: it’s entirely possible to change careers without going back to school. You just need to assess where you are right now and make some realistic plans for the future. The average person changes jobs 10 to 15 times over the course of their career. The Department of Labor doesn’t track how often people change to an entirely new career, however- and the reason why will give you hope for your own career change. In short, the Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn’t track career changes because there’s no real consensus about what it means to change careers. Why? Because many of these transitions are subtle, gradual shifts, not abrupt leaps into the unknown. You don’t need to change your working life entirely, all at once, to embark on a new career path. If you want to make a change, but don’t want to spend years paying to do it, these steps will help: Talk to People Who Love Their Jobs One of my favorite career change stories is my mother’s because it shows how important it is to find your people when looking for the right occupation. She became a registered nurse because she happened to get a secretarial job at a hospital … and realized that she felt right at home with the nurses on staff. Sure, the job appealed to her, but she also sensed that she would fit in. Talking to nurses who loved their jobs helped her realize that it was the right path to take. Now, in that case, she had to go back to school. But depending on the job, you can find your fit without extensive retraining. The key is to start talking to people who love what they do and think about whether you’d love it, too. Keep an eye out for these folks in your daily life, at work and after hours, and be prepared to ask them how they got to where they are now. Chances are, they’ll be delighted to tell you. People who love their careers love talking about them. Set Up Informational Interviews Once you’ve targeted a new occupation- or narrowed your list down to a few possibilities- it’s time to set up some informational interviews. A more formal version of the conversations you’ve been having with people in your dream career, informational interviews allow you to gather intel on jobs, industries, and employers before taking the plunge. Again, you’ll likely find that people are eager to talk to you- especially if you make it clear that you’re looking for information, not an immediate job. Using your networking connections, make a list of potential interviewees, and then start sending out requests for meetings. Look for Transferable Skills For your next step, look for transferable skills. Skills lists can help. Make a list of the skills required by your current job, and skills required by your target job … and then look for the match. You’ll probably be surprised at how much overlap there is, especially among the soft skills prized by hiring managers. Identify Your Personal Skills Gap- and Fill It Of course, when you’re making your lists, you’ll also notice areas where your current skill set doesn’t quite match up to requirements for the new job. Don’t despair. There are often free and cheap ways to close the gap. For example, if your target job requires coding skills, you might look into free coding classes online. Get Experience Any Way You Can While some hiring managers may take a chance on you, based on your transferable skills and motivation, you’ll bolster your case if you can acquire relevant job experience. No worries, though: you don’t need years of full-time work to show that you know your stuff. Look for opportunities to get experience developing your new skills and/or working in your target field, including freelancing, contract work, and volunteering. The goal is to learn … and get something on your resume that speaks to your new career direction. Keep Reassessing As you network and interview and research, keep in mind that nothing is set in stone. You’ll learn more about your potential career path as you pursue it. Sometimes, what you learn will validate your previous decisions … sometimes, it won’t. If you learn something that makes you question your choices, listen to your gut. You’re not committed to one course, just because you’ve started in that direction. Learning what you don’t want to do is just as valuable as learning what you do want to do. Take that information and consider whether it’s time to change course.

How to Compare Employer Benefits Packages

How to Compare Employer Benefits Packages How to Compare Employer Benefits Packages Employer benefits packages are often overlooked by job searchers. Once you have found your dream job or your dream salary, the questions pretty much stop there. But what if you are considering more than one job offer, or deciding whether to leave your current job for a lateral move? In those cases, employer benefits may factor heavily in your decision. What Benefit Packages Include Benefits packages, including health insurance, retirement plans, vacation and sick leave, and life and disability insurance can represent up to 30 percent of your compensation. How to Compare Employer Benefits Packages Great benefits can help increase job satisfaction and can help you make or save more money over time. Here’s what to pay attention to when comparing employer benefits. Retirement Plan There are different types of retirement plans, and companies may offer a combination that includes more than one. You can start to evaluate them by defining your terms. Some companies offer what is known as defined benefit plans, which most people would call traditional pensions. Employers offering defined benefit plans make regular contributions to the plan, and the plan guarantees a certain amount of monthly income for the employee in retirement. The other common option is a defined contribution plan, which includes plans like the 401(k). In this type of plan, employees make regular contributions to the account through their pre-tax paychecks. The money is invested and may grow over time, but there is no guaranteed return, and the employee manages both the investment and the distributions. Small companies may instead offer an individual retirement account (IRA), SEP IRA, or SIMPLE IRA. These work like a 401(k), but may have different contribution limits. Roth IRAs may also be offered, into which you put after-tax dollars, but the money is not taxed again when the money is withdrawn at retirement. An employer offering a defined contribution plan or IRA, the employer may also match contributions, which is an added benefit. Some employers will match 50 percent of the amount you put into the account, up to six percent of income. The plan also may be vested, which means that the amount of benefits you receive accrue over time. Health insurance If you are considering a full-time job at a mid-size or large company, health insurance will likely be part of the benefits you are offered. A full 84 percent of full-time employees at US companies with more than 100 workers have health insurance through work, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The average employer pays about $6,025 for individual coverage, with the employee contributing about $1,081 in 2014. Employers pay an average $16,834 for family coverage, with workers contributing about $4,823 per year, according to Kaiser Family Foundation. Numbers like those explain why employer health coverage is so valuable. If you have an option, look for the coverage you need, check if your doctor is in-network, and compare how much each plan costs in terms of monthly paycheck deductions as well as deductibles, copayments, and prescriptions. Dental and Vision Coverage Around 60 percent of Americans still get dental coverage through work, and around the same number have private health insurance that includes vision. Dental and vision coverage will not likely sway your job choice, but if you are considering two offers, check to see if your providers are in-network and how much you will pay in annual premiums, copays, and deductibles. Life Insurance Nearly two-thirds of full-time employees are offered life insurance through work, and it’s one of the most popular benefits around. About 97 percent of people participate in the company’s life insurance benefits. It’s inexpensive, and often available without any physical tests, and typically pays at least a year’s worth of salary should something happen to you. Find out if the company pays for coverage and how much, and if you as an employee can purchase additional coverage at a discounted rate. Disability Companies with more than 100 employees will probably offer some sort of disability insurance benefit.  But most of it is short-term disability, which covers a percentage of your salary if you are out of work for a period of time that goes beyond your allotted vacation or sick time. The less common option is long-term disability, which is offered by less than half of US employers according to LIMRA. Since an estimated one in five employees will miss work due to disability, insurance that covers months or years of missed work if you become ill or injured outside of work is a valuable benefit.   Vacation Time Vacations are not guaranteed in the U.S., but we get an average 13 days of paid vacation time per year. An offer that includes more than that may be worth considering if time off is important to you. Remember to verify if sick days and holidays are included in vacation time. Some companies now offer “paid time off” (PTO) days that can seem very generous on the surface. Remember PTO can include all vacation, personal, sick and holiday time. Daycare Whether you have kids now or not, on-site or company-sponsored daycare is a valuable benefit. Study after study has shown that daycare increases employee retention, productivity and referrals, and the availability of on-site daycare are a big influence on prospective employees. When considering a job at a company offering daycare, you can ask to take a tour of the daycare facility. Work-Life Balance Quality of life is more difficult to quantify, and it may be difficult to get a clear picture from a prospective employer. Along with the benefits listed above, you can learn about the hours you are expected to put in each week. Remember, your time has a value. If your workweek is 40 hours, you make more per hour than if it’s 80 hours. If a company extends a degree of schedule flexibility to hard-working employees, the job may be worth more than another offering a few thousand extra dollars in salary.
